intro-stataYou’ve probably heard a lot of great things about Stata:

It’s user-friendly and logical.

It’s is incredibly powerful–it can do just about any statistical test you need with many options.

It has some of the best manuals, help files, and other user resources.

It is reasonably priced without any add-on costs.

But even user-friendly statistical packages can be time consuming and frustrating to learn on your own.

This workshop will get you up to speed quickly with data management, graphing, and statistics in Stata.

You’ll become comfortable with opening a data set, exploring the data via tables and graphs, and running common statistical tests.

The workshop will show you the process of organizing your work so that you can write code and use the same code over and over again on numerous data sets. This will help you save countless hours and unnecessary frustration.

In this Workshop, you will learn:

This workshop will take place in four 90 minute sessions. We will cover the following topics:

Working with data

  • An overview of the Stata environment: windows, do-files, output and saving
  • Opening and importing data sets
  • Merging and appending data sets
  • Entering data
  • Reviewing the data: filter, sort
  • Defining variable and value labels

Exploring the data

  • Locating missing data
  • Using boxplots to find outliers
  • One way and two way frequency tables
  • Summary statistics
  • Histograms, bar charts

Manipulating and transforming data

  • Recoding variables
  • Handling dates
  • String to numeric conversion
  • Keeping, dropping observations
  • Using subsets of the data

Bivariate Statistics

  • Correlations and simple linear regression for two continuous variables
  • Comparing group means with Two-sample t-tests, paired t-tests, and one-way Anova
  • Comparing distributions with nonparametric tests: Wilcoxon Rank Sum

Organizing your work

  • Creating “do-files”
  • Creating reproducible and automated analysis
  • Creating pdf’s of your coding and output
  • Creating and exporting graphs into pdf’s

Finding help

  • Stata help menu
  • On-line sources
  • Third party add-ins

Every Live Workshop at The Analysis Factor includes:

✅ 1 year of access to the workshop website
✅ All the data, programming code, exercises and handouts you’ll need
✅ Live webinars and question & answer sessions
✅ Video recordings of all live content for later or repeated review
✅ The opportunity to ask questions live and on workshop web pages

Who is it for?

This workshop is for you if you:

  • Are a graduate or soon-to-be graduate student
  • Are required to use Stata on the job and feel uncomfortable using the software
  • Manage a small to midsize consulting firm looking for a reasonably priced statistical software package
  • Want to be able to automate and replicate your analysis by learning to write code

It is not for you if you:

  • Are a complete beginner in statistics. You should already understand hypothesis testing, descriptive statistics, and basic data manipulation.
  • Are an intermediate or advanced Stata user

  • You will get the most out of the workshop if you have some experience in data analysis and have taken introductory statistics.

The Instructor:

Jeff Meyer is a statistical consultant, instructor and writer for The Analysis Factor.

Jeff has an MBA from the Thunderbird School of Global Management and an MPA with a focus on policy from NYU Wagner School of Public Service.

The Workshop Format:

Our workshops have 3 main components that work together to support your learning.

1. Live Webinar Presentations of Workshop material, with recordings

Jeff will hold the workshop live via webinar. You attend over the internet, and you will see what is happening on Jeff’s screen. Audio is through either your computer speakers/microphone or by telephone.

You can ask questions out loud or write it into the chat, and you never have to leave your house or office.

2. Live Q&A Sessions, with recordings

After you’ve had about a week to work through all the materials, you have the opportunity to meet Jeff in three live Question & Answer sessions.

Bring your questions about the presentation or applying Stata to your own research.

We’ve also created a workshop site that you have full access to. For a year.

3. Private website with supplementary materials, resources, and Q&A

This private website is our home base for the workshop. It’s where you’ll find everything you need to support your learning:

  • Video recordings of every session made available within 48 hours. Review the material right away, months later, or while doing the exercises. Or if you need to miss one (or all!) of the live sessions, you can still participate on your own schedule.
  • Data files. You get full access to use the data to try everything on your own.
  • Handouts with all the Stata code, available ahead of each session.
  • Exercises. (Yes, homework!). You really need to practice this stuff. Get your hands dirty.
  • A place to submit written questions between sessions. So as you’re reviewing videos afterward (or if you missed a live session), just submit a question. Jeff will answer it right there on the website.

You’ll have access for a year to this workshop site. So as we add resources, re-record sessions, and answer more questions each time we offer the workshop, you have access to the updated material.

What Our Students Say About Our Workshops:

“Jeff Meyer clearly explained how to apply statistical concepts to real life data sets using Stata, my primary programming language. Jeff is an excellent instructor. He explained when and how to use the commands in such a clear and understandable manner. Also, both Jeff and the Analysis Factor team answered my questions completely and promptly. I was also happy to hear that Jeff would be available to answer any questions that we may have for up to a year after the workshop ended! I am so glad that I found Analysis Factor. I also liked the fact that the live webinars are recorded. Every researcher has such a busy schedule, and I wasn’t able to make it to all of them. But because the sessions were recorded, I was able to watch them on my own time and catch up.”

“The ability to hang on to all of these materials, including the bonus materials is a really great feature. I feel like I have this whole library of references that I can go back to if I need it.”
Noelle Chesley

“Thank you so much. I learned so much in this workshop and it will change the way I examine (and design) my data sets from now on! I think the homework is an excellent part of the workshop. The video recordings are terrific. All of the resources provided for this workshop were outstanding.”
Prudence Plummer-D’Amato, PhD

“The workshop is absolutely and exactly what I had been searching for a long time. I am glad I finally found your website.”
